Pitching is about accuracy and distance control, so your finish should be shorter and more compact than it would be with your driver or irons. Keep the length of your backswing and forward swing equal—roughly waist high to waist high for a pitch of 30 yards. A more abbreviated finish means less excess motion in the swing, making it easier to strike the ball solidly.
Here are a few tips to hitting more precise wedge shots:
- Hit the ball first, then the ground. A descending blow will create more spin and a higher, softer ball flight.
- Feel as if you're swinging with your arms and stomach, rotating your shoulders and hips to the left of the target.
- Finish with your arms extended in front of your body. By coming to a controlled stop, you avoid the common mistake of decelerating the clubhead through impact, which leads to poor contact.
