Rules: The Ball

Other People's Property

March/April 2008

My opponent and I were playing with two other golfers who weren't part of our match. I mistakenly hit a ball that belonged to one of those players. It wasn't my opponent's ball, but should I have been penalized?
Barbara Heimgartner, Julietta, ID

Whether the stray ball was your opponent's or that of another player who was not part of your match, you still played a wrong ball (see Definition of Wrong Ball and Rule 15-3, Wrong Ball). The penalty for playing a wrong ball in match play is loss of hole. In stroke play, the penalty is two strokes; and if you don't correct your mistake before teeing off on the next hole, you'll be disqualified.
