Rules: Equipment

Soggy Situation

March/April 2008

I was playing a fun round recently and it began to rain hard. My grips became wet and the club kept slipping out of my hands. My partner suggested I hold the grip with a dry towel while I was hitting, which helped a lot. Can I do this during tournament play?
Kira Blair, Charlottesville, VA

You're in luck: The Rules of Golf permit you to use a towel or handkerchief to help you grip the club in any golf competition, even when it's not raining (see Rule 14-3c, Artificial Devices and Unusual Use of Equipment). And on hot days you can also use resin or powder to keep your sweaty hands from slipping.
