When tapping in a very short putt, do you have to stand behind the ball, or can you hit it from the other side of the hole, putting the ball toward you?
—Ted Karkus, Hewlett, NY
You can putt the ball from either side of the hole because there is no rule against standing beyond the hole and tapping the ball toward your feet and into the hole. But beware: The rules prohibit standing on or straddling an extension of the line of putt behind the ball (see Rule 16-1e, Standing Astride or On Line of Putt).
