Paint the Town RED!

Rich_red

Is your schedule filling up with holiday soirées? Whether the parties are black tie or cocktail attire, make sure you put your best face forward.

The look this year is all about healthy, glowing skin with a big emphasis on the come-hither red lip, so:

Try a lightweight base such as Chanel Naturally Luminous Fluid Makeup SPF 12 ($43) that conceals imperfections and allows skin to shine.

Set foundation with Bobbi Brown Sheer Finish Loose Powder ($32) to absorb excess oil and create a flawless finish.

An ultra fine, loose powder blush in a bold color like YSL Touche Blush in Blackcurrant ($41), allows cheekbones to pop. If you’re worried about its staying powder, layer powder blush with a cream blush.

  • Always play down the eyes to balance out bold lips. Try a gold, shimmery eyeshadow. I prefer a shadow stick because its easy to apply and put in your clutch for later touch-ups. A very-black mascara completes the look, such as Fiberwig Mascara ($22).
  • And the finishing touch (left): Estee Lauder Signature Hydra Lustre Lipstick in Rich Red ($20). This is universally flattering and won’t smudge or run up smile lines.
  • Enjoy!

    A Village Built by Hairdressers!

At the annual luncheon at the Waldorf Astoria hosted by Intercoiffure, an international organization of high quality hairdressers that count over 3000 salons in over 50 countries as members, I mingled with stylists and colorists from across the nation who gathered to honor each other's work, trade ideas and get the forecast for the upcoming year ( I'll give you a sneak peak: its all about above-the-shoulder cuts, a return to precision cutting and less dimensional hair color).

This year, Intercoiffure honored Vidal Sassoon, the man applauded as a key force in turning the craft of hair styling in to a multi-million dollar industry. His latest Hairdressers Unlocking Hope is an initiative that benefits Habitat for Humanity to raise money in support of the families who lost everything after Hurricane Katrina. This November, from the money raised thus far- 19 homes will be built in St. Tammany Parish, La., which was hit hard during the Hurricane.

So far the initiative has raised $1,150,997!  Salons are either donating directly or raising money through their customers. We can get involved too! Find a participating salon near you at  www.whodoesyourhair.com.

    Save Your Own Skin

    Md031800

Anti-aging creams, serums and treatments aim to improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles on our face, neck and decollete, all in an effort to preserve our youth. But what about the rest of our skin?  Is it not aging, too? And as golfers are all too aware, excessive sun exposure can damage the skin on arms, legs, hands and feet as well as faces.

So stop neglecting them with MD Skincare's Alpha Beta Daily Body Peel ($78 for 30 applications). Based on the success of its Alpha Beta Daily Face Peel, aimed at reducing signs of visible aging,  the peel consists of a simple two-step application process using pads that contain Alpha and Beta Hydroxy Acids to rid the skin's outer surface cells, smooth out texture, attack acne-prone areas and remove discolorations. Since they're safe enough to use every day, add them to your daily routine for a quick and easy way to keep your body beautiful.

    New Dry Shampoo

    Oscar_blandi

Fall is a beauty editor's busiest season. Between meetings with dermatologists, planning upcoming beauty stories and endless business travel (some of which is fun!) I find myself neglecting my usual "upkeep"  manicures, waxes, brow tweezings -- endless appointments that keep me looking well-groomed and generally beauty-editor-esque.

When I am slammed during the work week- the first to go in my routine is washing my hair.  Fortunately I've got the secret to keep my hair looking shiny, smelling clean and, for the most part, behaving. I tried the new Oscar Blandi Pronto Dry Shampoo Spray ($19). I spritz it on first thing in the morning to soak up excess hair oils and pump up some volume. The spray is also gentle on the scalp.

Try it to save some time during your own Fall frenzy.

    You Nailed It!

    Nlr59_midnightinmoscow

Cooler weather is on its way: time to store the hot pinks, tangerines and other 'loud' summer polishes adorning your tanned fingers and toes in favor of Fall's moodier shades. Last season's noir nails took the fashion jet set by storm, and while dark nails are still in favor, this season they are richer and deeper -- yet still wearable. So store your blacks and grays away in favor of elegant shades of crimson, ruby and amethyst.  These colors are appropriate for all ages and will look stylish whether they're wrapped around a golf club or a glass of bourbon.

Our top favorites? OPI's "Pretty at the Premiere" polish from the Holiday in Hollywood line and the Russian Collection's "Midnight in Moscow" polish (left).

    The Look of Fall

As much as I hate to say adieu to the warm, summer weather, I eagerly await Fall's fun cosmetic trends. Several looks stood out this year on the runways: Cat-like, dramatic eyeliner, dark, stained lips and clear, matte skin. And while "golf course beauty" doesn’t always correspond to the back stage at the Bryant Park tents that make up Fashion Week,  I have discovered some great products that incorporate Fall trends and are appropriate for daytime at the country club:

    Lancome
    1. Lancome Artliner Precision Point Eyeliner ($27) is goof-proof, smudgeproof and sweatproof. The liquid liner pen has a foam tip so you can create an even, crisp line. Cranberry and Ice Carob are softer options than the often harsh look of noir and espresso.

    Neutrogena
    2. Neutrogena MoistureShine LipSheers ($15) are cool on contact and contain an SPF 20 to shield sun-sensitive skin. To get the trendy "bitten" look, opt for shades Ruby Bliss and Fresh Rose.

    Almay
    3. Almay Pure Blends Mineral Makeup ($12) has an SPF 15 for protection while the mineral powder softly coats skin with a matte texture. The travel-friendly container makes it easy to throw in your golf bag. Available in six shades.

    Head Case

    Kpak_split_end_mender_lg

I recently cut off all of my hair. Well...a good portion of it. I was so sick of dealing with damaged, split ends every morning (and the fact that I had been eyeing the new "Katie Holmes" inverted bob haircut didn't hurt either) that I had my stylist chop off about eight inches of what I now refer to as dead weight. Over time, wearing a cap out on the course and the constant dry-out from the sun had left my hair really unhealthy and the simple task of running a comb through it became a struggle.

Fortunately, I found a product that will keep my new, fresh cut rid of split ends. Joico's K-PAK Split End Mender ($15) is delightful and truly keeps its promise! It contains antioxidants, fatty acids and botanical moisturizers to keep strands nourished as well as a patented Keratin Silicone Complex that locks the moisture in and seals the cuticles. Add a little of the lotion through towel dried hair and style as usual- you will see and feel a difference.

From Jackie O's Lips to Your Ears!

    322237

Last week, on my way back to the office after a meeting, I discovered an old fashioned apothecary, Cambridge Chemists, on Manhattan's Upper East Side. While I perused the vast selection of La Roche Posay sunscreens and other "difficult to locate" European items, the owner entertained me with tales of his store. Valued for their variety, and quality, of products, Cambridge Chemists welcomes suggestions and requests from their customers on what products they should get to stock on their shelves. According to the owner, among his elite clientele was Jackie Onassis, a customer since 1984. One day she came in and laid a tube of cream on the counter and said, "I am tired of 'schlepping' bottles of this hand cream back from London to all of my Manhattan friends." If he would carry it, she would send all of her friends here for it. The cream, Innoxa One & All Hand and Nail Cream has been selling off his shelves ever since. He handed me a bottle and promised to make me a believer.

One week later and he succeeded. Normally my hands are bit dry and have their fair share of calluses (thanks to regular golf lessons)-- but the greaseless, fragrance free cream has really done wonders. My hands are softer and smoother. I understand why it flies off his shelves- I've already talked two friends into picking up their own bottles (they were using all of mine!).

    Burn Begone

Do you have a friend who constantly nags and hounds everyone in their foursome to wear sunscreen? That would be me (and by the way…those are good friends to keep around!). Unfortunately, I didn’t take my own advice last weekend during a girls’ getaway trip to the Jersey Shore. I started out on the right foot when I applied a broad spectrum SPF 45…but I waited too long (more than a few hours) before reapplying my second coat. Come Monday morning at the office, I was looking quite red (lobster red to be exact) and boy did my associates give me a hard time about it.

Luckily, a friend let me borrow her Banana Boat UltraMist™ Aloe After Sun Continuous Spray Gel and now I am a total convert. The spray has a 360 nozzle that could reach my sore back and tingling calves and it felt cool against my skin. Not only did the aloe take the red out of the burn in half the time it normally takes to heal, it also kept me cool and comfortable, easing the pain during that awful itchy stage (you know, the stage where you’re skin is just dying to dry out and peel). I went through two cans in five days and my skin healed in record time and in one piece!

    Heat Wave

As much as I love summer—longer daylight hours, backyard barbecues, clam bakes, etc.—I dread the 100 degree temps and steamy humidity.  After walking nine holes—or, as a New Yorker, entering the subways—you often feel a little gamey. Heavy perfume doesn't mask this smell but only adds to it, to the annoyance of your foursome or fellow riders. Luckily a few new summer fragrances are softly scented and keep you smelling fresh and clean.

Prive_2 Hamptons Sun Prive Bloom contains relaxing notes of dune grass, blue plum and prive blossom. 1.7 oz. for $65, Eau De Parfum.

Dior Dior Addict 2 Summer Peonies is a feminine fragrance with notes of white violet, white musk, bergamot and, of course, peonies. 3.4 oz  for $50, Eau De Toilette.

LhisseyyL'Eau d'Issey Summer has captured the smell of fresh cut grass and bouquets of white flowers with honeysuckle, precious woods complex, freesia, lily of the valley and Osmanthus. 3.3 oz. for $58, Eau De Toilette.

Comptoirjpg Comptior Sud Pacifique Aloha Tiare is an exotic blend of Tahitian gardenia, vanilla, coconut and ylang ylang. 1.6 oz for $53, Eau De Toilette spray.

    LPGA Makeovers

Ever since I was seven years old and discovered my mother's Estee Lauder Private Collection fragrance dusting powder, I've been obsessed with all things beauty. Occasionally, I mistakenly assume that everyone is as interested and fascinated by beauty products, makeup and hair as I am… (but apparently they're not).

While watching the US Open last weekend, I found myself wishing I could get a hold of some of these women players and give them a bonafide GFW makeover. It doesn't take much to make a difference- the right base, a flattering blusher, tinted lip balm and some black mascara can do wonders. I realize that golf is a sport and the players are athletes, not models…I wouldn't want them to be. But who says that being athletic and looking you're best are mutually exclusive? I love that Christie Kerr wears a versatile taupe eye shadow, the perfect shade for her, and black mascara to make her baby blues pop. Didn't she look great in those photographs holding that gleaming trophy?

I truly believe that when you put your best face forward, it affects the way you carry yourself and, perhaps, it will enhance your game, your image, who knows, even some players' endorsement potential.

In case any of the LPGA players are reading (and this goes for women golfers everywhere), here are a few of my favorite products that work well on the course and work for all complexions:

Chanel Teint innocence Naturally Luminous Fluid Makeup SPF 12. Conceals without feeling heavy or “foundationy”. $42.50, Chanel.com

Lancome Divine Lasting Curves Mascara in Black. To get full, clump-less lashes- it's all about the wand and this one is the best! $23.00, Lancome.com.

Neutrogena MoistureShine Tinted Lip Balm. Long lasting, SPF 20 for protection and available in eight shiny shades. About $8, Nuetrogena.com.

Benefit Cosmetics “10” blusher. This is the perfect combination of bronzer and blush and suits all skin tones. $26, benefitcosmetics.com.

Bare Escentuals Wearable Eye Kit in Meet The Browns. Three shades of mineral eye shadows that can be mixed and matched to define your eyes- whether they're blue or brown! $32, sephora.com.

    Beauty Pick: Sunscreen Bodywash

I am always reminding friends, relatives and even strangers to wear sunscreen—and then I hound them to reapply it! It still shocks me that women go out to hit balls and think that a hat is enough protection. Craziness! It only takes fifteen minutes to cause serious damage and add ten years to your appearance. Who wants wrinkles and skin cancer? Not me. I wear sunscreen every day and my moisturizer, foundation and powder all contain an SPF. Now you can get additional protection in really cool and innovative wash-on formulas.  Earlier this year Freeze 24/7 introduced IceShield Facial Cleanser with SPF 15, which protects against incidental sun exposure with broad spectrum protection—it also infuses skin with antioxidants—or as I like to call them, the age fighters. Now there is a similar product that protects your body—BY142 Body Wash (picture below) with SPF 15 binds sunscreen to skin and lasts for six to eight hours. Add a dollop to your loofah, or washcloth, in the shower and benefit from the added sun protection throughout the day. (IceShield: $48 for 4.2 oz, freeze247.com; BY142 Body Wash: $32 for 8.0 oz, BY142.com)
