Big Break Ka'anapali - Tina's Last Take on the Big Break

Well, this is the last interview for The Big Break Ka'anapali.  Sniff :-(

Tina Miller  and I share something in common - we are sad to see it end.  While Christina Lecuyer is not as fond of reminiscing about her BB experience (and she stayed quite a while), Tina has a different view - she may have been eliminated earlier, but she came away with a lot of fond memories.  I wonder sometimes if Christina would rather have had the Tina experience on the show but leave early.  I guess we'll never know.

I always enjoy my interviews with Tina because I never fail to learn something.  Today was no exception.  Did you know...

Better yet...I'll let Tina tell you...

Thanks Tina!  Best of luck at Q-school in the USA or Europe.  Love to see your name in LPGA lights soon.  You were very close once - you can do it.  Believe in yourself as others do and you'll do just fine.

I want to close this post with another big "Thank you!" to all the readers out there who have visited "Big Break Central" at GFW :).  I have had so much fun and you've all been great.  I feel like I know you.  I sure hope we can meet in person someday.  In fact, I wish I could quit my day job and do this fulltime, but then I'd need a sugar-golfdaddy :)

The good news is that Highway 18 is starting on July 22 and I'll be right there blogging all about it and interviewing the contestants just like I did for BB Ka'anapali.  In fact, I'm very excited to start it off with an interview with the host, Keri Murphy, on Friday.  I'll post that interview next week as a prelude to the show.

So I hope you'll join me again and tell me what you think of this new show and the contestants.  You know...together, we could write a book about reality golf TV!

Big Break Ka'anapali - Kim Celebrates Victory Finally

Kim_winner2 Can you imagine what it must have been like to keep silent for 7 months about the biggest break in your life!  LPGA exemption, new BMW, cash, sponsorship from Adam's Golf....WOW!  Kim Welch must have been bursting at the seams of those great outfits she wears.

This week Kim gave us a bit of a scare being behind early in the match, down 2 after 5 holes, but she did what she needed to do in match play to win - be patient.  It reminded me of Tiger all those years ago when he was still an amateur coming from behind to clinch yet another championship.   Patience is indeed a virtue and it paid off big time!  And what was really great about it --- NO DRAMA REQUIRED!

Let's hear what our champion and next LPGA contender had to say about her win and experience on The Big Break Ka'anapali

Congratulations Kim!  You are a true champion and you deserved to win.  But I have the same question I asked when I first talked to you....How are you going to get a sponsor's logo on all those bandannas of yours :)

The Big Break Ka'anapali - Bandanna Babes Battle it Out on Big Break

Kim_and_sophieLast week on The Big Break Ka'anapaliLori  said in her exit interview with Stina that she thought that Sophie had the advantage over Kim IF she continued to play the way she had been up until today.  Certainly she demonstrated an amazing short game that was superior to Kim's and many of the other contestants over the past 11 episodes.  Watching her take the first hole tonight was impressive and then to be 2 up after 5 holes, I bet she thought this was going to be her day.  I know I did. WRONG!

Two  holes later, they're back to "all square" and Sophie looks like her bandanna is starting to feel just a little bit tighter around her throat.

Let's hear what Lori thought of Sophie and Kim's final match and what surprised her the most.

As you know, Kim and Lori play a lot together on The Duramed Futures Tour and in September we'll see Kim up against the likes of Lorena Ochoa at The Navistar Classic with her coveted LPGA exemption.  I know Lori will be cheering her on, along with all of us.

Thank you Lori for your willingness to share your thoughts and opinions every week on this blog.  It hasn't always been easy, but you've stuck with us and I really appreciate your support.  I loved your blog postings every week as well on TGC.  You should keep writing - you're a natural :)

Best of luck on tour!

Big Break Ka'anapali - And the winner is...

The Big Hitting Bomber, Kim Welch!

Surprise!!! Well, okay, maybe not. I think that this was the only show where I actually guessed the right winner on The Big Break Ka'anapali.  Although it started off with Calendar Girl, Sophie Sandolo taking an early lead, Kim held steady while Sophie lost her focus and confidence.  And like so many putts tonight, after the 7th hole, it was all downhill from there for the lady who said, "Are we going to get any easy putts?"  Sorry Sophie...not on this course.

As is the custom every week, I spoke first to the lady who is responsible for all of these interviews.  She kicked off BB Central on GFW on March 26 and she stuck with it to the bitter end.  And as we all know, it was pretty bitter.

Let's hear one more time from Christina Lecuyer and what she thought of tonight's 18 hole match play final.

So as much as it was a "once in a lifetime" experience, for Christina, it is not suprising that she's happy to walk away from the BB and move forward in her golfing career.  I think we'll be seeing a lot more of her in the future.  Q-school is only a couple of months away and if her game continues to improve as she said it has lately, I wouldn't be suprised to see her make it this time.  She came so close before and as we know...this girl never gives up!

But what we won't see is Christina on another Big Break.  She's been there...done that...and it's pretty clear, she won't do it again.  And who can blame her.

Thanks again Christina and the very best of luck to you!

Big Break Ka'anapali - Episode 11: Tina's Take On Lori's Loss

Dscf2578

Well, we're really winding down on The Big Break Ka'anapali and I'm starting to feel a bit sad about it being over in just 1 week (although getting a good night's sleep on Tuesdays will be a nice change :)).

I've gotten to know so many of the ladies and they each bring a unique perspective on the series.  Everyone in the show has fans and foes, but they have all been great sports for being part of this post-episode analysis each week.

I really enjoy Tina Miller's take on each week's episode, and given the number of people who read/listen to her interviews each week, I can see she's a favorite with a lot of you out there.  I think you'll enjoy this week's interview just like all the rest.

Well, it's USA verus Europe next week.  I wonder if we'll see an upset or if we'll say, "Oh...I knew it all along." :)

No matter what happens, we do know we'll see some serious golf, played by serious players with serious prizes waiting for the winner.  Just to remind you what the winner gets...

1)  Tournament exemption on the LPGA Tour
2)  All entry fees for the 2009 Duramed FUTURES Tour waived
3)  Adams Golf endorsement contract, including $10,000 cash
4)  BMW Z4 Coupe which comes with a tour of the manufacturing plant and a full day of driving with a pro instructor at  the BMW Performance Center.

When you look at this list and listen to the ladies talk about how hard it is to make ends meet on the mini-tours (and it really is hard!), you can start to understand why things got so ugly so early.  These girls wanted needed this Big Break so badly, it affected their game, their personalities, their behaviors, their sportsmanship and ultimately their careers.

Suddenly all that drama doesn't look so shocking anymore.

Big Break Ka'anapali - Episode 11: Kim plays it safe and smart

Kim_swingI don't really think many people who've been following The Big Break Ka'anapali was at all surprised to see Kim Welch end up in the final match.  But I bet many didn't expect to see her play as conservatively as she did.  Certainly Stina and Andrew were surprised that she didn't come out with her driver blazing and hit those 300+ drives.

And I'm sure a number of you (me included :)) were a bit disappointed that there weren't more "oh wow" shots from her. But as Kim said herself...she doesn't always play like that.  She goes into matches with a strategy and she plays smart, which isn't always dramatic.  Let's not forget Tiger playing it smart with iron shots off the tee at the British Open.

Let's hear more from Kim on last night's episode and how she felt watching Lori's putting miseries.

Next week Sophie will have Europe on her side and North America will likely be cheering for Kim.  It almost feels like a Ryder/Solhiem Cup match.  The Golf Channel couldn't have scripted it much better than this!

Big Break Ka'anapali - Episode 11: Christina's thoughts on Lori's walk

Christina_lecuyer1Even though to us, it's a whole week ago, it's actually the afternoon of the same day that Christina was eliminated from The Big Break Ka'anapaliLori , her roommate, but in no way her bosom buddy, has just been eliminated only hours after Christina's demise at the hands clubs of Sophie.

What's Christina thinking now after watching Lori take the walk?  Let's find out...

Well, it sounds like Christina is not surprised to see these last 2 talented ladies go into the final round. Her take on "who would benefit the most" is quite interesting.  I'm curious what you think about her analysis.

Anyway...we should expect to see some serious golf next week and very little drama.  Hmmm...I guess that's a good thing?  I don't know - I was getting a little hooked on the drama myself.  I can't believe I actually wrote that :)

I sure hope Kim plays more aggressively than she did this week - we love those 300+ drives!  It was interesting what Christina said..."Par will get you close to the top, but it may not make you win."  I wonder if that's a message of things to come.  Or...perhaps Kim's just got more brains than her obvious brawn and knows that Par is enough with Sophie.  I don't know...Two weeks ago, I would have said, "No problem."  But, Sophie's a trickster...maybe, just maybe, we'll see a European win the Big Break Ka'anapali.  Wouldn't that be a shock - one of the top 10 sexiest players in golf just might take home the big prize.

Can't wait to watch!

Big Break Ka'anapali - Episode 11: Lori at a loss with her putter

Well, The Big Break Ka'anapali shocked me again -- Lori was beaten by Sophie.

02_no_lori

I know...I know...Kim was there too.  But Kim, I understood and expected her to be in the final 2-some. But, Sophie?  Nope...I did not see that coming.  I was shocked she beat Christina last week.  I didn't think she'd outlast Lori.  Oh my...wrong again!

But...did Sophie really beat Lori OR did Lori beat herself like she said Christina did last week?

We won't know until we talk to the Big Breaker herself.  Lori...what happened?  It was like your putter was on steroids...

Line versus pace - hey...we've all been there!  I am embarrassed to say I 3-putted a few too many greens today myself. Arg!!!  I just could not get the pace right on the greens today.  It seems that the harder you try, the harder it is to do what you want, and the more likely it is you do what you DON'T want to do.  I have no doubt that Lori tried her best - her best just wasn't really "her best".

I think all of us would agree, we didn't see the real Lori out there tonight.   Something was off - her putting was not even close to what we expect of her.  But hey..."that's golf"!

So what do you think we'll see next week?  Will Sophie shock us again! I guess we won't know until next time. Hope to see you all back her for Kim, Lori, Christina and Tina's take on the final episode!

Big Break Ka'anapali Episode 10: Two Wrongs Don't Make a Right

Tina317Since the day that Christina "choked" on her words on The Big Break Ka'anapali, I've been waiting to see what Tina Miller would say about Christina being eliminated (if she didn't win of course) and how would she react to her joining the others who had left the show.  I assumed she'd say something like...  "Serves you right!  What goes around comes around!  It's about time!"

Well, this week we found out what really happened and guess what Tina did...You'll have to listen to find out :).

So what did you think about that interview?  Did you ever in your wildest dreams think that Tina and Christina would be Christmas shopping together?  LOL!  The next thing we'll hear is that Lori and Christina are sharing a house in California and playing Duramed Futures Tour practice rounds together. Haha...

Maybe it is all made up drama on the BB OR maybe Tina is just one classy golfgal.  I know what I think...what about you?

Big Break Ka'anapali Episode 10: Kim Kicks Butt

Kim_poseThroughout The Big Break Ka'anapali, the forums have debated who will win this series.  Now that some of the long shot "hopefuls" have taken the walk of shame, one name now stands out as the favorite going into the final 3-some...Kim Welch.

Kim has lots of fans and lots of talent - a nice combination if you can get it.  Last week we missed Kim as she was busy traveling and doing what she does best - play golf.  This week, she's focused on one thing - winning the Duramed Futures Tour Championship that carries a winning purse of $15,000, but she took the time to talk to us.  Thanks Kim!

Let's find out from Kim how she felt about this week's show.

Hmmm...so Sophie's a "goof ball".  Haha...I love that!  I just wish there had been more goof ball moments on this series.  I really really don't think we ever saw the "real ladies" of BB Ka'anapali.  I'm thinking I may just stalk them with my video camera now that the show is over so I can show you who they really are - anyone care to pay my travel costs???? :)

Well, we're down to the last 3 players --  Kim, Lori and Sophie.  We are already scheduled to talk to Lori and Kim next week, which I know will be entertaining.  BUT...message to Sophie...get in the game!  The audience wants to hear from you.  Call me!  I'm already up until 3 AM working on the posts after the show, so I can stay up a little longer.  Timezones are no problem.

I think we'll see a tiny bit of melodrama -- it wouldn't be BB without it.  But I expect that it will be overshadowed by good golf (for a change).  So all of you who were planning on turning it off - DON'T!  You'll miss a really really great finale. I hope to see you there.

Big Break Ka'anapali Episode 10: Christina Finally Cracks

Christina_fades_2Well... The Big Break Ka'anapali has just finished it's 10th episode and I'm sad to say that the woman who launched GFW's Big Break Ka'anapali Central is sadly going home.

For those of you who joined the GFW BB party later in the series, you might not know that Christina Lecuyer was the first Big Break Ka'anapali contestant to agree to be interviewed after every show, every week.

Given what she knew about her trials and tribulations during the tapings, I have to say I'm pretty impressed that she was willing to share her ups and downs (and letdowns) with us each week.

I'm not sure I could have done it (No, I take that back - I KNOW I couldn't have done it).

From the grudge match with Lori to the elimination round with Sophie who chose to keep tightening the etiquette screws (maybe Sophie should watch Padraig Harrington's new movie on golf etiquette), today was the final "choke-hold" on Christina that finally made her break.  Let's hear what she has to say about her final day on BB Ka'anapali...

Thank you Christina for your willingess to share your challenges on this show so openly with all the BB fans.  I personally want to thank you for your generousity and ongoing support of this blog series.  It would never have happened without you.

I wish you the very best of luck in your golfing future.  Hope to see you win your LPGA card at Q School in September so you won't need the exemptions this series had to offer anyway.

Big Break Ka'anapali Episode 10: Lori glad for grudge match

So, we're now down to just three contestants on The Big Break Ka'anapaliChristina Lecuyer was given her walking papers tonight.

03_no_christina

It was quite the immunity challenge tonight, don't you think?  One might almost think it was rigged, but I know it wasn't.  But boy oh boy...they couldn't have planned it any better... Lori against Christina in a head to head battle.  Wow!

Lori said at the beginning of the show that Christina was going to "beat herself".  And in the end, even Christina admitted it was true - she wasn't beat by anyone but herself tonight.  Anyway, let's hear what Lori has to say about tonight's club to club combat...

Well, I guess we should be happy that next week should be just about golf - we did get to see some good shots by Lori, Kim and Sophie tonight.  And it would appear that those three are pretty buddy-buddy, so we won't be seeing any serious drama -- or will we? Hmmm....

With these ladies and their head games, you just never know what's going to happen.  I'm not taking any bets, that's for sure!

Big Break Ka'anapali - Episode 9 - Tina's advice to the ladies

Tina_miller Well, we've heard from Christina, Lori and Susan on The Big Break Ka'anapali Episode 9 - "Rules are Rules!".

Each had a unique perspective on what really happened this week.  Think that's all there is?  Think again, because Tina Miller has a view of her own that may surprise you...

Well, we've heard from just about everyone now, except Kim Welch.  Unfortunately, I haven't been able to connect with Kim for her thoughts, but hopefully she'll be back next week.

So... we're down to 4 pretty spirited competitors to say the least.  The "peacemaker" Tina left the show a while ago so she can't tame them, and now with Ms. Congeniality, Susan Choi, gone, it's really going to be an unrefereed fight to the end.

I don't know about you, but I'm thinking this show is starting to look more like Roller Derby :)

Big Break Ka'anapali 9: From Dippen Dots to "Short Game Wizard"

S_choi_swing_2

....Susan "Oh Sugar!" Choi has come a long way...

For those of you who have been watching The Big Break Ka'anapali regularly, you'll probably agree with me that the biggest surprise (and probably the most pleasant) was watching the youngest player, who just turned pro in order to be in this show, hit some really clutch shots (especially around the green) when she really needed them.  I love how she shocked the other veterans of the game over and over again.  Even Stina and Andrew stood in awe at this sweet young thing's ability to pull off shots when others struggled.

Who can forget that chip-in off the green that left jaws dropping in the BMW zone?  Even Brittany Lincicome said that both Kim and Susan had great golf swings.  I doubt at the beginning of this series anyone would have thought an LPGA player would have picked out Susan when asked what players impressed her.  Kim, sure, but Susan?  I don't think so.  She is arguably the most underestimated player the BB has seen.

She's just so fresh and so "fearless" as Lori said. How could you not love a gal who loves elimination challenges?  LOL!

Well, sadly, the "Short Game Wizard's" magic just wasn't quite up to par this week and Susan's going home.  Let's hear from her on her experience with the BB and her final day on the show...

Such a friendly, talented and lovely young woman!  I have no doubt she'll make the LPGA someday (I've seen her play and she is good!).  I heard from the other girls that Dana helped boost Susan's confidence in the early shows, but something tells me there is an inner strength in this golfgal that's been there a long time.

I can imagine that watching Susan leave the show was pretty painful for someone else too.  Now that Susan's gone, Christina Lecuyer is really "on her own" in the final fearsome foursome.

Big Break Ka'anapali 9:Bend but don't break

Christina_unhappySo did you miss a week without The Big Break Ka'anapali?  I have to say I did.  As much as I loved the US Open and its drama, the ads for this week's BB definitely peaked my interest.

Sure looked like these ladies were heading for a showdown!  And all guns were loaded and pointing straight at that target on Christina Lecuyer's back.  Let's hear what she had to say about tonight's endurance challenges, starting with breakfast (I bet she lost her appetite)...

Few would argue that tonight's episode was tense, emotional and somewhat disturbing.    And when you think about it, next week's episode is only a day away for these gals.  Something tells me things won't have quieted down much with only 4 ladies left and LPGA tour exemptions and BMW so close they can almost touch them.

Meet you here next week?  Don't forget to check out Lori's interview this week and Susan Choi's BB Ka'anapali Central debut coming up Wed. Tina Miller will also be joining us later in the week and let's hope we can get Kim Welch to come back and give us her two cents on this $20,000 show.

Big Break Ka'anapali 9: "Queen of Mean" Makes a Mint

Imagine 5 minutes before your first Big Break Ka'anapali challenge of the day, you discover that $20,000 is on the line.

How would you feel given it is the largest check you've ever received? Imagine what it would mean to win that money with just one chip, putt or pitch? How would you play under that kind of pressure?

Probably NOT your best...

Certainly Susan "Short Game Wizard" Choi missed some shots that she'd proven time and again she could pull off under pressure.  But tonight just may have been too much for her - Susan is going home...

04_no_susan

Another player who was feeling the pressure was the winner of the big purse, Lori Atsedes.  She knows exactly how it felt then to "play for dough" and also how it felt today to watch the show months later and discover the winner was also pegged as the "Queen of Mean" by one of the shows hosts. Was she expecting to see what she saw tonight?

Let's hear it from her...

I want to apologize for some of the less than clear audio in the middle of Lori's interview. At one point I lost sound completely, so I couldn't share part that in the video.

But to summarize what she said, so you don't miss some great commentary...

When I asked Lori about her "I wasn't thinking straight" comment before the 5th chip shot challenge, she said, "At that point I was thinking, Oh my gosh, I could win $20,000!!! I've got to get my head in the right place. Instead of getting caught up in the prize and caught up in the money, I still had a job to do. It's like rehearsing your acceptance speech on the first hole and you haven't played the17 in between. That's a big chunk of money for any of us - you can get caught up in the prize."

On the elimination challenge, we heard Lori say, "I'm not going to let this chance to beat Christina go by the wayside." I asked her if it was because she felt Christina was the toughest competitor or something more personal. Well...I was pretty surprised to find out from Lori that she said those words in a previous show and they were taken out of that context and put in this show, Well well....that's very sneaky, don't you think?

Finally when I asked her what it was like later that night after such as stressful day, she shared this, "It was uncomfortable, and as much as everyone off camera tried to make it right, tried to get through the situation and not have everyone mad at everybody, it wasn't working. Nobody could say anything that was going to make the situation better. It was a situation that escalated and the snowball had turned into a snowman. And no matter what anyone says at this point, it's not going to help. So everyone was really sticking to themselves."

Never a dull moment pretty well wraps up tonight's episode. I can't wait to see what next week brings! Come back a bit later and see how Susan felt about her elimination this week and what Christina has to say about her "endurance challenges" in just another day in paradise.

The Big Break Ka'anapali 8: Golf Vixen is back

It's week 8 -- The The Big Break Ka'anapali is down to 5 contestants.  It's really coming down to the wire with more ladies eliminated than left playing.

Golf_vixen3 Golf Vixen, Cirbie Sheppard, has been playing hostess to the ladies who walk from the course to Elimination Alley.  She's listening -- she's sympathizing -- she's learning... and, what I love, she's sharing with us what happens from "the other side of the BB tracks".

Cirbie's become an expert on post-elimination-round blues.  I personally think she should write a song about it.  After all, she does play piano and she's a song writer...so naturally a song about the Big Break Heartbreak wouldn't be such a bad idea. But I digress...

Cirbie, in the midst of very last minute, crazy, wedding plans, graciously agreed to another GFW interview about this week's show.  Always entertaining, Cirbie didn't disappoint us...

I love my chats with Cirbie.  When I first saw her on the BB, I was taken aback by her bare feet and piercings and goth attire. But she is such a joy to talk to and to laugh with.  Every time I get off the phone, I have a silly grin on my face.

I don't care how she plays golf - barefoot or in her Tae Kwon Do uniform (black belt and all) - wouldn't matter to me.  Playing with her would probably be the most entertaining golf game in my life.

Best wishes Cirbie on next week's nuptials!  Say hi to Dana at the wedding and invite her to the Golf For Women's BB Ka'anapali Central interview party!

Big Break Ka'anapali 8: Tina shares Sam's secret

I get asked sometimes why I interview the ladies that have been eliminated  on The Big Break Ka'anapali and the answer is simple - they have great insights into the show from a side we rarely see on TV or on TGC website.  After they "take the walk of shame" we don't hear much from them.  And yet, they have so much to contribute to the commentary and "behind the scenes" drama each week.

Tina_in_water So it's always a pleasure to talk with Tina Miller and Cirbie Sheppard after the show airs to hear things like:  What did the latest eliminated player have to say about the day?  How is she handling the defeat?  What's the latest on the Christina/Lori  battle?  What didn't they show on TV?  Who did you think would walk through that day that day?   Stuff like that...

Want to know answers to those kinds of questions?  Then just keep coming back and listen to interviews like the one I had with Tina Wed morning.  I know you'll enjoy this one - I sure did!

I've said it before and I'll try again...if any of the other ladies out there want to join in on the fun (and this really is a lot of fun), let me know!  I know the BB audience would love to hear your thoughts and opinions on each week's competition and drama.  So why not join the party?

Big Break Ka'anapali - Episode 8: Nice girls do finish last

Can you feel the clock ticking on The Big Break Ka'anapali?  I can almost feel the tension coming through the television.  I'm glad the Golf Channel isn't in HD or we'd really be in for an "up close and personal" view of the beads of sweat on these ladies' brows!

Sadly, the golfer who would easily win "Miss Congeniality" on this series, Sam Head, went home today.

05_no_sam

Christina_in_action

You could really tell that everyone was very sad to see her go -- and no one more than the woman who beat her, Christina Lecuyer.  We've heard almost every week how much Christina admires Sam as a person and a golfer.

And, if that wasn't bad enough...as usual, Christina was smack dab right in the middle of this week's drama.  The residual effects of her choke comment continue to haunt her and she faced her first elimination challenge with no one in her corner.

Sure...we know she's a tough competitor, but...how tough is her skin?  Let's hear what she had to say after the grueling day finally came to a close.

Well, there you heard it -- it was a very tough night for Christina having to relive that difficult day (or few days) on the BB.  Thank you, Christina for continuing with the interview even though you weren't really "up" for it tonight. I'm not sure I would have been as gracious under the circumstances.

Well...only five ladies are left.  Who do you think will go home next week (oops, I mean the week after - no BB next week due to the US Open Coverage).  Anyway...I'm certainly not the one to ask.  I haven't picked the right one yet!

But we know one thing for sure -- it will be veeerrry interesting.  Something tells me that simmering pot is about to boil over!

I heard from the winner of  The Big Break Ka'anapali elimination challenge tonight, Christina Lecuyer and what it was like playing against Sam and Kim and knowing that she was "on her own" -- Not a lot of fanfare happening on the bench for tonight's winner.

Now, let's hear what that was all about from Lori Atsedes, the current leader in the points race and immunity winner over Kim, without ever having to make a putt...

You probably heard it tonight on TV when Lori said, "There are no friends on the golf course."  I think we lost everyone's friend tonight when Sam took a walk.  So I guess going forward, Lori just may be right.  Let's meet back here same time next week and see if that theory holds true.

Meanwhile, check back tomorrow and Thursday for more from Kim, Tina and Cirbie.  It will be interesting to get their thoughts on what went on in front of and behind the cameras this week.

Big Break Ka'anapali - Episode 7: What goes around...

Well, this interview was a very pleasant surprise.  After seeing Tina Miller leave last week's Big Break Ka'anapali under the umbrella of the "choke" comment, I thought she might be a little bitter.  Many would be.  In fact, we saw a number of the ladies this week give Christina Lecuyer the cold shoulder or worse as a result of her whispered comment to Susan.

So when I called Tina, I was expecting more of the same, but that's not what happened...

Class act, don't you think?

Tina will be joining us again next week to share her thoughts on Episode 8 of the Big Break Ka'anapali.  We've all heard that it's going to be "hot" (and I'm talking about the weather) so I hope you'll come back and share your thoughts on it as well.

Big Break Ka'anapali - Episode 7: Can't get enough of Maui

Bb9_pinflagWell, it was another beautiful day in paradise on Big Break Ka'anapali, especially for Kim Welch who won the immunity challenge by the skin of her Titleist and was rewarded with a bonus golf trip back to Hawaii!  Wow...nice bonus!  And Just a few chip shots was all it took.

Hmmm...maybe I should take up this game full time...how hard can it be to hit a little white ball inside a 10 foot diameter circle?  Whooa, Golfgal!!!  Stick to your day job!  Chipping for dough is like singing for your dinner.  You'll starve!  [LOL, I feel like I'm in one of the new Ping commercials]

Anyway, it was a very good day for Kim and one I'm sure she'll never forget.  it was also an unforgettable day for Courtney, Christina and Lori but for much different reasons. Let's hear Kim's perspective on the elimination challenge and the battle of the barbs.

For those of you who don't follow the Duramed Futures Tour, you should check it out.  Here's where Kim stands today - a very impressive 6th place.

Kim_at_duramed

Play well this week, Kim and get inside the top 5.  Would love to see you full time on the LPGA next year!

Big Break Ka'anapali Episode 7: Target golf, without the golf

So we're halfway through Big Break Ka'anapali.  Heading into tonight's show were seven talented ladies who, while thankful they were still alive, were feeling a lot of pressure to stay in the running.

Courtney was unfortunately eliminated this week, but the elimination challenge was actually quite good -- some solid golf played by both her and Samantha.

07_no_courtney

You'd think that would be enough for a great show, but nope!  Golf wasn't the focus of this episode.  Hey!  It's reality television...and television rating success is spelled M-U-D S-L-I-N-G-I-N-G.

I've got some great interviews for you tonight and the rest of the week from current and past players.  You've heard Lori's side of this cat fight, so now it's Christina's turn.

Let's listen to what she has to say after watching the behind the scenes antics that she may or may not have known about, all those months ago.

So are we having fun yet?   My, my... I can't imagine the "heat of the battle" heating up any more than it already has, but apparently, there's lots more to come next week.

Can you handle it?  ;)  Then I'll meet you back here next week.

Meanwhile, check back Wednesday, Thursday and Friday this week for more interviews with Kim Welch, Tina Miller and Cirbie Sheppard and get their thoughts on this week's show.

Big Break Ka'anapali - Episode 7: Teflon Lori Sticks it to her roommate

As I was watching tonight's Big Break Ka'anapali, I was immediately struck by the elevated tension in the air between all of the players and their latest target -- Christina Lecuyer.

Target_practice

Lori started by the show by saying, "This is my office and I'm going to take care of business." And did she ever!  If she wasn't giving Christina the "stinkeye" (what is that anyway?), she was dishing out some of the best trash talking we've heard on this show thus far.

After watching the show, I had to know...was it  because Lori was upset about Christina's "choke" comment last week OR was it because she saw Christina as her toughest competitor and wanted to start playing mind games with her?

So I called Lori after the show aired and asked her about tonight's episode and her role in the drama.  Take a listen and then you decide.

Lori did warn us last week that it was the tip of the iceberg and she was right.  To learn Christina's side of this cat fight, just keep coming back to Big Break Central on GFW.  There's lots more to come!

PS: Unfortunately I could only share about 10 minutes from Lori's interview due to some technical constraints, but I will post the other part of the interview later this week, where she shares how different the pressure is on the BB compared to LPGA events and who her favorite LPGA player is.

Get to know Big Break Ka'anapali's Golf Vixen, Cirbie Sheppard

Although the time spent with Cirbie Sheppard was short, there's one thing I can say for sure...she left a big impression.  How could anyone possibly forget the barefooted Golf Vixen as she stepped up to play the elimination challenge of her life against Tina Miller in episode three?

If we had been able to zoom on the BMW Zone during that challenge, I am sure we would have seen some jaws drop.  She really gave Tina a run for her money and walked away from the BB in style.  Speaking of style...I think she should be a guest on "Golf with Style." What do you think?

Golf_vixen_2 I caught up with Cirbie last week just after she finished walking her dogs: Tank,  a Rottweiller /Pit Bull crossbreed; and Maxim, a Boston Terrier. She calls them "the lil bundles of joy" in her life. When I heard that, I just knew she was my kind of girl.

So Cirbie, I'm curious how you came to be part of the BB.

I had joined the Cactus Tour as an amateur and played some tournaments and then turned pro. I injured my wrist pretty badly, but still continued to play a couple of tournaments. The coordinator saw how badly my wrist was swollen and unfortunately, the scores were pretty bad as a result, so I had to withdraw.

The Golf Channel was holding auditions for the Cactus Tour players at the Legacy Course in Arizona.  I bought a house on that course, so it was pretty convenient for me.

On the day of my audition, my fiancee was going on tour in Europe and he left at 4 a.m. that morning.  Then I had to get up and be ready at 9, and so I said, "I just need to get some eggs and stuff into my system and I swear I'll be fun." <giggles> And they said, "Oh, you're high maintenance already on us, huh?"

I was so nervous because I had never auditioned for anything like that before, so I had to chug a couple of beers down to calm my nerves. <LOL!>  But it was fun and [it] worked out.  A few weeks later, they gave me the call for the semi-finalists and after that I got the call for the finalists and that was amazing. I was completely blown away to be chosen.

So you had to go to three sets of interviews...

Yeah, and they did background checks on us and they told me that I had a criminal misdemeanor because I was going to court for a DUI.  So they called me the second I got out of court, which was pretty funny,  but everything went fine with that and they picked me for the show.

Cirbie_and_tina You really played your heart out on that show, battling Tina Miller to the very end.  Tell me what was going through your mind at that time.

You know I was just hoping that I could perform... unlike I did the first couple of days.  I was very disappointed how I performed the first couple of days because it made me look like I was a terrible player and that I didn't belong there. And I knew the viewers would just be hating me.

So to be able to go into elimination very strong, and then in a playoff and give her a run for her money, I knew that I could throw it back in everybody's face. So I was nervous, but filled with adrenalin because I was pumped and focused -- very focused!  I really wanted to beat her so bad! <giggles>

But I started getting too creative with the shot.  And then there was that putt which was a golden opportunity...definitely missed.  But everything happens for a reason and I was happy to go, because all the other girls had been playing for so long -- they deserved it more.  I was tickled pink to be there in the first place.

More like tickled black - you wear a lot of black :)

<laughs> Definitely tickled black <laughs> -- that's a good one!

Yes, you really did look focused.  And sometimes when you're really focused, time seems to stand still. Your pace of play was talked about a lot.  Did you realize how long you were taking?

They were trying to make a TV show and I know for a fact that they missed a few things.  Also, they over exaggerated the time limit.  I remember them coming up and telling me what the time was, but personally I think it was well under three minutes.  And I remember the Marshall coming up and telling me that.  But considering what they have to do on the show... and they edit it for certain reasons (and we signed pretty much our life away on that show <giggles>), I just had to suck it up and let it look like I took a lifetime. <laughs>

I did take a long time, but I was so scared of mis-hitting it on a short shot like I did the first couple days because my wrist just won't allow me to make that kind of shot.  So I was in choppy grass and I was thinking, "Oh God!  Should I putt or should I chip? You know what's going to happen if I skull it, it's not going to be good."  So I decided to putt and I was nervous and they said that could hear my heartbeat in the microphone.

We were all on pins and needles watching it.  One of the things I love about this whole series is that I have no idea what's going to happen on each show.  And so watching you that night, I actually thought you were going to take her.

Yeah...I thought I was too!  And then I went, "Ah...oh well...everything happens for a reason." <laughs>  I think I and Cougar Momma were the only girls who were eliminated that didn't cry.  I was always told, "Oh we cried in the car on the way there to the interview, or I cried here or there..." Then they'd ask, "Hey Cirbie, when did you cry?" And I said, "I didn't cry at all.  I was just laughing -- I thought it was awesome that I could finally perform and show you guys I do have game." I could leave on a high note.

So tell me what happens when you do leave the show. I've heard you stick around in Hawaii, but what do you do with yourself?

All the remaining contestants are on one side of the Sheraton resort and the "eliminated" go onto the other side.  The first day I did para-sailing and snorkeling.  That was pretty cool. And we did things like whale watching and some of the girls did surfing, but the waves were only a foot high so I didn't want to surf.  I like the big ones <chuckles>  I went sunbathing.

Did you get your own room or did you have to bunk up like you did on the contestant side?

Just for the first night and then whoever gets eliminated next gets to room with you.  I had Liz in my room.  I remember that Adrienne was very shook up about how she was eliminated and so she needed some time to herself. So I told her she could have her own room so she could think about things and have her emotions come out...and we were there if she needed us.

I heard you and Adrienne and Liz showed up on the set -- were you allowed to do that?

<laughs> No, what's funny is TGC producers haggled us about it, but they gave us the vouchers to eat lunch there that day.  So we said, "You gave us the vouchers to come up here and we happened to notice that there was an elimination going on. So of course, we're going to watch."  You could see us just in the very background for a split second on TV.

Cirbie_and_troy Have you been following the series on TV?

Oh yeah, my family and my fiancee and my friends come over and watch it and we have some brewskies and we cook some food and we make a fiesta out of it.

We'll watch the week before and then we'll watch the new one so we're all caught up and don't miss anything.  Cause it's fun...it's a lot of fun, especially for me, because I know those girls and the event of a lifetime that we experienced together.  We'll always remember that and cherish it no matter what.

[Aside...for those of you who don't know who Cirbie's fiancee is, I think he's from Vancouver and his name is Troy Healy.  He's the guitarist for the very popular hard-rock band Neurosonic.  I just went to their website and you know...I'm not into hard rock (Aerosmith is the closest I get :)), but they are really good!].

So have you stayed in touch with the other ladies?

A lot of us stay in touch.  I see Christina and LoriKim and Adrienne and I stay in touch via texting on our phones...and some of the other girls on email. Tina and I touch base on MySpace

Adrienne actually came out to one of Troy's concerts at the House of Blues in Texas.  She came out one night and got to meet my family and got to meet Troy and we got to go backstage and hang out with all those people...she had a lot of fun.

Have there been any surprises for you on the episodes so far?

You know, in the very first episode, one of the girls chunked her shot about 10 yards and they didn't show that at all.

Who was that?

Sophie...ya, they took that out, which was very strange. That's when we were Team Pink and we were hitting up and into the wind on a par 3 into the third hole. So they can portray people any way they want.

And there have been a couple of others, but...C'est la vie...we've signed our life away. <laughs>

But I think they portrayed each of us pretty well.  Now the personalities are starting to come out and there are more cat fights.

I have a journal and I wrote in it everyday, and with each new girl that was eliminated I would ask her, "What's the gossip...what happened...what's going on..." and I'd write it all down.  It's nice to look back now and see what's going to happen each week and then see how it is portrayed through the camera.

You should publish that when it's over.  I'd love to put it up on GFW after the show's all over.

That would be awesome.

Are you continuing to play golf?

Yes!  I never had my wrist fully heal, so I was doing some chip shots and some sand shots with the golf simulator at my house and I hit one a little fat and the shock just shot up my arm and it numbed my pinkie and ring finger pretty badly for about 20 minutes.

After that I wasn't able to grip very well, so I went to the doctor and got it x-rayed and thank God, nothing was broken.  But he said it was such a bad sprain that it never healed properly.  I kept playing on it and doing things so that it couldn't set itself.  So I had to wear a brace for a few weeks and finally got it taken off last week.  But if I do anything that is extracurricular, I have to wear the brace.  So I can't really get out to the golf course too much right now, but I'm planning to.

And I'm also planning my wedding!

Really...that's so great.  When's the big day?

June 10th.

Wow, you have to send me pictures so I can post them here.

It's going to be a rock and roll kind of wedding, so there's going to be golf tees and guitar picks on the tables that are personalized with Cirbie and Troy...lots of fun stuff.

You are such a positive person.  How did being on the BB change your life or did it?  What did you learn?

<giggles> Well, I knew going in I was definitely in over my head, but I was going to put forth the most effort that I possibly could and I told them that.  And they said, "Well, if you're a deer in headlights, just suck it up!"

It has changed my life in terms of my golf game...I don't think I'll really be nervous over another golf shot
