- Careers in Golf
Q: I am a sophomore at Wake Forest University and an avid female golfer. Upon entering college I decided that I did not want to compete at the collegiate level because I felt that it was best for me to focus on my studies. However, my dream is to have a career in golf since I cannot imagine not having it be a part of my life. Do you have any suggestions?
—Danielle Sullivan, Ma
A: First and foremost, I think you should try to play on the golf team. I know how difficult it is to play golf and study; after two years of college I decided I just couldn?t complete my major, which was engineering, and play on the team full-time. But sooner or later you have to learn how to organize your time, and being on the golf team will force you to do just that because you?ll have to figure out how to play golf and complete your schoolwork. Even if you can?t make the team, it?d be fun for you to practice with the team or just to hang out with them.
Do anything to make sure you keep your game sharp. Golf will help you in your future business. One lady I met during a pro-am wants to bring her entire staff, who are mostly women, to my golf school at The Villages because she does more work and makes more money on the golf course than she does anywhere else. So golf is such an important business tool.
Beyond playing, the possibilities for you to enter the golf world are endless. In the past six or seven years, golf has grown tremendously and more women are needed than ever on the business side of golf. At colleges and universities, there are Professional Golf Management Programs, where students can get a Bachelor's Degree in Golf Management. The LPGA Tour, for example, is always looking for new people with new ideas. You could also be part of the USGA. The equipment companies are always looking for qualified females. We employ women at Nancy Lopez Golf who are selling and marketing golf clubs. But you need to know what golf?s all about and how clubs will help a player?s game.
In addition, there are a great variety of careers at private and public golf clubs and courses; specialties include club management, superintending (the people who supervise the condition of the course), greenkeepers, as well as good old golf instruction.
You?re in luck, Danielle; there are many avenues open in the golf world, especially for qualified women!
