Minneapolis Golf Guide

The U.S. Women's Open host city is golf heaven, so be a player, not just a spectator.

With more than 80 public courses, the Twin Cities offer plenty of golf. If you're short on time, there are five courses within the city limits (minneapolisparks.org). But for the best options, you'll need to hit the road. Within 30 miles, you'll find rolling layouts with large oaks and vast wetlands (golf.exploreminnesota.com).

Rush Creek

In Maple Grove, 18 miles northwest of Interlachen, Rush Creek has a comfortable stone and stucco clubhouse. The course, which has hosted three LPGA Tour events since opening in 1996, is beautiful and challenging. Wetland and marsh come into play on 14 holes, and the water hazard that runs across the dogleg-left 18th makes it as good a final test as any.
Green Fee: $105; 763-494-8844.

Legends Golf Club

A Garrett Gill/Paul Miller design, this densely wooded course in Prior Lake, 24 miles south of Interlachen, plays at 5,297 yards from the forward tees, and five sets of tees make it a fair test for all golfers. The natural setting—wildflowers, birches, songbirds—is a visual delight, and the limestone clubhouse is an inviting place for drinks or dinner.
Green Fee: $79; 952-226-4777.

3
The Wilds Golf Club

Also in Prior Lake, this Jay Morrish/Tom Weiskopf design plays 5,118 from the forward tees and 7,028 yards from the back tees, and features large, undulating greens and steep elevation changes. Try shrimp seviche on the restaurant's stone porch, with views of the 18th green, and browse the pro shop, a third of which is dedicated to women's products.
Green Fee: $80; 952-445-3500.

3
Prestwick Golf Club

Thirty miles east of Interlachen, this Kirt Sandness design in Woodbury measures 5,228 yards from the forward tees; most holes have elevated tee boxes that let you see all the way to the green. Plus, more than 250 women hold their handicaps here. The hot popovers with cinnamon butter at Axel's Restaurant might be one reason.
Green Fee: $68; 651-731-4779.
